La Pobla de Montornès is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, its ajuntament issued fractional emergency currency in 1937 to address the acute shortage of small-denomination coin. The Republic had effectively lost control of the coinage supply, and local councils stepped in — producing notes that in some cases were printed in quantities of a few hundred, intended for purely local exchange.
The near-square format is characteristic of many Catalan municipal emissions at this denomination, where card stock substituted for proper banknote paper. Turró catalogues this as a single type with no known varieties.
