Daimuz is a tiny coastal municipality in the Valencia province — its population in the 1930s numbered in the hundreds. That a village this small issued its own fractional currency is less surprising than it sounds: the Spanish Civil War created a catastrophic shortage of small coins across Republican-held territory, and hundreds of local councils across the Valencian region printed their own emergency issues in 1937 to keep market transactions moving at all. The Consejo Municipal's choice of the Gandía printer Imp. S. Artes Gráficas placed it among dozens of similarly modest commissions handled by that shop in the same period.
