Cuatretondeta is a village in the Comtat region of Valencia with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred during the Civil War years. Like hundreds of other Spanish municipalities caught between a collapsed banking system and the Nationalist blockade of Republican-held territory, the local alcaldía issued its own fractional emergency notes in 1937 — vales de necesidad — to substitute for the hoarded and disappeared small coinage that had vanished almost entirely from circulation by mid-war.

The Gari Monerris catalogue documents these Valencian municipal emissions with reasonable completeness, and the 578-A designation places this among the smaller, lower-denomination issues that saw hard daily use and rarely survived intact.
