Issued by the Preventori Judicial de Barcelona — the institution responsible for holding minors in preventive detention — this note was an internal scrip for the facility's economat, a kind of controlled commissary system. Emergency local issues of this type proliferated across Republican Catalonia in 1938 as the peseta's purchasing power collapsed and small-denomination coinage virtually vanished from circulation. Each issuing body produced its own solution, and the results were frequently printed on whatever card stock was at hand.
