Issued during the Spanish Civil War by the Preventori Judicial de Barcelona — the city's remand prison holding untried detainees — this economat token note was produced for use within the institution's internal canteen rather than for general circulation. Economat scrip of this type allowed facilities operating under Republican administration to manage internal purchasing without drawing on scarce hard currency. The issuer was not a financial institution of any kind, which makes this piece unusual even within the already heterogeneous world of Spanish Civil War emergency paper.

The thick card stock was a deliberate choice: prison-environment scrip needed to survive rough handling while remaining difficult to replicate outside the facility.
