Abydos occupied one of the most strategically loaded positions in the ancient world — the narrowest crossing point of the Hellespont, where Xerxes famously bridged the strait in 480 BC and where toll collection on Black Sea grain traffic made the city prosperous enough to sustain its own civic bronze coinage through the fourth century.
