Rhegion's bronze coinage of this period was struck under conditions of near-constant political disruption. The city had been devastated by Dionysios I of Syracuse in 387 BC — its population massacred or enslaved — and was subsequently resettled, only to face renewed pressure from Campanian mercenaries who seized the city around 282 BC and held it until Rome intervened in 270 BC. The bronzes produced across this span reflect at least two distinct civic administrations with sharply different political alignments.
HN Italy 2534b falls within a series showing die-link relationships catalogued across the SNG ANS specimens, suggesting concentrated production rather than extended minting across the full date range.
