Metapontion's bronze coinage of this period was struck by a city already well past its political peak — the colony had suffered badly during the aftermath of the Pyrrhic War and was approaching the catastrophic decision to side with Hannibal after Cannae in 216 BC, which effectively ended it as a functioning urban center. These small bronzes circulated in a city living on borrowed time.
