Additional information

Dardanos occupied a strip of coastline on the Asian side of the Hellespont so strategically placed that it lent its name to the Dardanelles strait itself. The city's autonomous bronze coinage of this period was produced under shifting Pergamene and later Roman influence following the bequest of the Attalid kingdom in 133 BC — a political transition that left many Troad cities minting small bronzes almost as assertions of continued local identity rather than for any pressing monetary need.
