The bold, frontal leonine mask fills the field, executed in the vigorous South Italian Greek style characteristic of late fourth-century Campanian bronzes. A beaded border encircles the design. |

Nuceria Alfaterna, the Campanian city later destroyed and refounded by Rome following its defection to Hannibal in 216 BC, produced a limited bronze coinage in the late fourth and early third centuries. That act of defection — siding with Carthage after Cannae — cost the city its population, who were expelled and dispersed across other communities. The coins predate that catastrophe by over a century, struck when Nuceria was among the more influential of the Campanian league cities.
HN Italy 2437 is among the scarcer civic bronzes from the region.
