Additional information

Metapontion's bronze coinage of this period was municipal small change, filling gaps left by the city's silver staters in everyday transactions. The city's prosperity — built substantially on grain agriculture in the fertile Bradano valley — was already declining by the mid-third century, pressured by Oscan encroachment and the broader destabilization of Magna Graecia. These bronzes circulated through that slow contraction.

HN Italy 1701 is a well-documented type but Rutter's corpus records enough die variation across the series to suggest extended production rather than a single issue event.
