Additional information

Metapontion's bronze coinage of this period was produced by a city already well past its political peak — the Tarentine wars and repeated Lucanian pressure had shrunk its effective territory considerably by the early third century. Bronze issues served local exchange after silver coinage became increasingly difficult to sustain at volume. The HN Italy 1674 type is reasonably well documented but not common in collections outside institutional holdings.
