Additional information

Metapontion's bronze coinage of this period reflects the city's precarious position during the wars between the Diadochi's successors and the indigenous Italic peoples — Pyrrhus of Epirus used the city as a base during his Italian campaign in the 270s BC, and the population largely evacuated with him when he departed. The city never fully recovered its earlier prosperity as a grain-trading power.
