Reverse description A cross on a stepped base set upon a globe, flanked by the letters M and A in the field, the entire device enclosed within a mandorla. A circular Latin legend surrounds the mandorla, identifying the issuing city. The composition is characteristic of Merovingian ecclesiastical iconography, combining Christian symbolism with civic identification. The design elements are rendered in the schematic, heavily stylized manner typical of late seventh-century Frankish tremisses struck at Marseille.
Reverse script Latin
Reverse lettering MASILIE CIVITATI
(Translation: City of Marseille.)
