| Obverse description | Central field bears the Portuguese royal shield — a quartered escutcheon displaying the quinas (five bezants arranged in a cross on a blue field) within an ornate border — surmounted by a royal crown of floriate design. The mint marks R and L flank the shield to left and right respectively, identifying the Lisbon mint. The entire central device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the circumferential Latin legend running between the inner beaded border and the outer rope-pattern rim. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of hammered coinage of the period. |
