| Obverse description | The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms at centre, featuring the traditional escutcheon with the five quinas (bezants) arranged in cross formation and the bordure of castles, all set within a decorated shield surmounted by a royal crown. The arms are rendered in the bold, slightly crude style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century hammered Portuguese coinage. A circular Latin legend runs around the periphery of the flan, reading IOANES III R PORTVGA P-R, identifying the issuer as King João III and indicating the Porto mint mark. The coin exhibits the irregular, slightly uneven flan typical of hand-struck silver production of the period. |
