To the right of the shield appears the mintmark letter 'V' (for the Porto mint, then designated by this letter). The circular Latin legend around the periphery reads EMANVEL : P : R : P : ET : A : DNS : GVINE o - V, identifying Manuel I as King of Portugal and the Algarves and Lord of Guinea. The design is struck in the characteristic bold, slightly irregular style of early sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered coinage. |
