Obverse description Central field bears the Portuguese royal shield of five quinas arranged in a cross, surmounted by a royal crown with a cross fleury at its apex, all within a plain inner circle surrounded by a beaded border. To the right of the shield appears the mintmark letter 'V' (for the Porto mint, then designated by this letter). The circular Latin legend around the periphery reads EMANVEL : P : R : P : ET : A : DNS : GVINE o - V, identifying Manuel I as King of Portugal and the Algarves and Lord of Guinea. The design is struck in the characteristic bold, slightly irregular style of early sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered coinage.
