| 正面描述 | The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms, consisting of the shield of Portugal — five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each bearing five roundels, enclosed within a bordure of castles — centrally positioned in the field. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate form. The circumferential legend reads IOAИES : III : R : PORTVGLI, with characteristically inverted N letterforms typical of this issue, running along the outer border of the coin. |

João III inherited a kingdom financially stretched by the Estado da India — the Portuguese commercial empire in Asia demanded constant naval expenditure, and silver coinage was under persistent pressure throughout his reign. The tostão denomination, worth 100 réis, was a workhorse of domestic trade rather than imperial finance, and Porto's mint operated as a secondary production center to Lisbon, resulting in characteristically smaller surviving populations from this house.
The third-type classification reflects successive modifications to the monetary ordinances of the 1540s and 1550s as the crown attempted to stabilize alloy standards against widespread counterfeiting.
