| Obverse description | The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms, consisting of the shield of Portugal — five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each bearing five roundels, enclosed within a bordure of castles — centrally positioned in the field. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate form. The circumferential legend reads IOAИES : III : R : PORTVGLI, with characteristically inverted N letterforms typical of this issue, running along the outer border of the coin. |
