Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms within a shield, featuring the traditional quinas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants, encircled by a beaded border. The legend IOAИS III R PORTVGA runs around the periphery in Latin characters, identifying King João III of Portugal. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown in high relief, typical of Manueline-influenced hammered coinage. The field shows the characteristic irregular strike quality associated with mid-sixteenth century Portuguese hammered silver issues. Pellet stops separate the legend elements.
