| Obverse description | Central field features the Portuguese royal arms — the quinas shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five plates (bezants) representing the wounds of Christ, with a bordure of castles — surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is rendered in a bold, somewhat archaic hammered style. A circular legend in Latin surrounds the design, reading IOANNES III REX PORTV ALG, identifying the issuer as King João III of Portugal and the Algarves. The lettering is separated by pellets or stops and follows the inner border of the coin. |

| Reverse description | Central field displays a large cross of the Military Order of Avis — a fleurée or budded cross — replacing the earlier Order of Christ cross used on previous tostão types. Depending on the variety (Gomes J3 137, 138, or 139), the quadrants formed by the arms of the cross are left plain, adorned with annulets (small rings or washers), or decorated with multi-rayed stars respectively. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign you will conquer'), a Constantinian motto commonly employed on Portuguese royal coinage of the period. |
