| Additional information |
Henrique I came to the throne at 66 years old, already a cardinal and in failing health, following the catastrophic defeat at Alcácer Quibir in August 1578 where his great-nephew Sebastião I died without an heir. His reign lasted just under two years, making coinage struck under his authority inherently scarce. The succession crisis his death triggered in 1580 ended with Philip II of Spain pressing his dynastic claim and absorbing Portugal into the Iberian Union — closing a chapter of independent Portuguese monetary production that would not reopen until 1640.
