| Beschrijving voorzijde | Facing left, the bare head of the nymph Arethusa is depicted in profile, her hair loosely gathered atop her head and adorned with a necklace at her throat. A dolphin appears in the field both before and behind the head, alluding to the maritime character of Syracuse. The ethnic legend ΣΥΡΑ is inscribed to the left of the effigy in archaic Greek characters. The style is characteristic of the early Syracusan bronze coinage, with a naturalistic yet simplified rendering of the nymph's features. |
