| Descrizione del dritto | Diademed head of Euthydemos I facing right, rendered in fine Hellenistic style with naturalistic portraiture. The hair is depicted in tight curls swept back from the forehead, with the royal diadem tied at the nape, its trailing ends visible behind the neck. The facial features are strongly modelled, conveying a mature and authoritative character. The portrait is set within a beaded border with no legend, consistent with the earliest coinage of this Baktrian ruler. |

Euthydemos I seized the Baktrian throne by overthrowing the dynasty of Diodotos, likely in the 230s BC, and spent much of his reign defending the legitimacy he'd taken by force. His most serious test came when Antiochos III — on his great eastern anabasis to reassert Seleukid authority — crossed the Hindu Kush and besieged Euthydemos at Baktra for two years without breaking him. The eventual peace, brokered partly through the ambassador Teleas, saw Antiochos concede the royal title to Euthydemos outright.
