The king wears a royal diadem tied at the nape, with bull's horns emerging from above the temples — an attribute associating him with Poseidon. The hair is rendered in naturalistic, deeply engraved curls falling across the forehead and temples, with fine granular beading forming the border of the field. | Descrizione del rovescio | Poseidon Pelagaios, nude, seated left upon a rocky promontory, his weight supported by his right arm resting on the rock. In his extended left hand he holds an aplustre (ship's stern ornament), and in his right a long trident resting against his shoulder, underscoring his dominion over the sea. The legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ runs in two lines flanking the deity, identifying the issuer as King Demetrius. A monogram appears both on the rock and in the outer right field, serving as a mint or magistrate control mark. The composition is bold and dynamic, emblematic of the Hellenistic royal coinage tradition. |
