Demetrius I Poliorcetes — "the Besieger" — struck this issue at Chalkis on Euboea during a period when his hold on Macedonia was already slipping. Having seized the Macedonian throne in 294 BC after killing Alexander V, he ruled for only three years before his own troops defected to Pyrrhus of Epirus and Lysimachus in 288 BC. The Chalkis mint was active in his final years of real authority, making this a product of a reign that collapsed almost as spectacularly as it began.
Newell's classification of this type remains the standard reference, with HGC 3.1#1014f narrowing the attribution further.
