Demetrius I earned the epithet "Poliorcetes" — the Besieger — largely through his siege of Rhodes from 305 to 304 BC, an operation so elaborate it required purpose-built siege towers of unprecedented scale. By 288 BC, however, his fortunes had collapsed: a joint offensive by Pyrrhus and Lysimachus stripped him of Macedonia almost overnight, and he surrendered to Seleucus I the following year, dying in captivity in 283 BC. These Amphipolis tetradrachms fall at the very end of his Macedonian kingship, struck from a mint that would change hands repeatedly in the wars of the Diadochi.
