He extends his right hand forward holding an aphlaston (the ornamental stern of a warship), while his left hand rests on a trident planted upright at his side. The reverse legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ runs around the field in Greek characters, and monograms appear to the inner left and right of the seated deity. The composition reflects the close divine association Demetrius cultivated with Poseidon as lord of the sea. |
