Obverse description Facing left, the veiled head of Kore (Persephone) rendered in fine archaic-influenced style, her hair bound beneath a diaphanous veil and adorned with a wreath of grain ears, the ears delicately rendered; she wears a pendant earring and a plain necklace. The drapery at the neck is suggested beneath the transparent veil, lending the portrait an air of serene divinity characteristic of fourth-century Kyzikene coinage. The legend ΣΩΤΕΙΡΑ, meaning 'Saviour', appears in Greek characters in the field, identifying the deity in her role as protectress.
