Obverse description Quadriga driven at full gallop to left, guided by a charioteer who holds the reins in both hands and a kentron (goad) in his right hand. Nike flies right above the scene to crown the victorious charioteer with a wreath. A grain ear is displayed in the exergue, a characteristic emblem of Syracusan civic pride and fertility.

Reverse description Large facing head of the nymph Arethusa turned to right, her hair bound in an ampyx and sphendone adorned with stars, wearing a double hoop earring and a necklace with six pendant drops. Four dolphins swim in the surrounding field, symbolising the island spring of Ortygia. The retrograde ethnic inscription ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ arcs around the design.
