Obverse description The Nymph Messana depicted in three-quarter view, clad in chiton and peplos, standing to the right and wielding a goad in her raised right hand while controlling the reins with both hands as she drives a biga of mules striding to the right. Nike flies above the scene from the right, extending a wreath to crown the mules in a gesture of victory. In the exergue, a finely rendered olive branch with berry serves as a decorative ground line element, and the entire composition is executed in the vigorous, naturalistic style characteristic of early Classical Sicilian coinage.
