Obverse description The nymph Messana, rendered in profile, holds kentron and reins as she drives a slow biga of mules moving left, depicted in the characteristically archaic-to-early-classical Sicilian style. The mules are shown at a walking pace with careful attention to anatomical detail. In the exergue, two dolphins are shown confronted, serving as a maritime symbol appropriate to the city's coastal identity. The legend ΜΕΣΣΑΝ appears in the field, identifying the issuing city.
