Obverse description Inebriated Dionysos reclines to the left atop an ass walking to the right, his body languidly draped as he raises a kantharos in his right hand. The god is depicted in a characteristically relaxed, semi-supine posture, conveying the celebratory and Dionysiac iconographic tradition for which Mende's coinage is celebrated. The figures are rendered in a vigorous archaic to early classical style, with bold relief typical of northern Aegean minting in the fifth century BC. The broad, slightly irregular flan leaves open fields around the central device.
