| Obverse description | The god Dionysos, bearded and wreathed, reclines leftward upon the back of a donkey walking to right, his right hand extending a kantharos; the composition conveys a sense of relaxed divine procession. The donkey is rendered in fine archaic style with careful attention to musculature. To the right of the main group, a bird perches rightward atop a bush bearing two stylised flowers, enriching the Dionysiac pastoral scene. The design occupies a broad, slightly convex flan with no encircling legend. The style is characteristic of the mature archaic-to-early classical Macedonian workshop of Mende. |
