Obverse description Three-quarter facing head of the nymph Arethusa, turned slightly to the left, rendered in the masterful die-engraving style attributed to Kimon. Her hair is arranged in loose flowing tresses, bound across the forehead by an ampyx bearing the engraver's signature K[IMΩ]N. She wears a pearl-drop pendant and a necklace with a collier ornamented with pearls. Three dolphins swim among her locks, with the snout of a fourth emerging to the left from the curls, a hallmark motif of Syracusan coinage. The ethnic legend [AΡEΘOΣA] appears outside the dotted border above, with [ΣΩ] in the left field.
