| Obverse description | A biga drawn by two mules advancing to the left, driven by the Nymph Messana depicted standing, her figure turned to the left, holding a goad in her right hand and the reins in both hands. The composition is rendered in fine archaic-transitional style with careful attention to the musculature of the animals. In the exergue, two confronted dolphins are depicted facing one another. The ethnic legend ΜΕΣΣΑΝΑ appears in the field. |

| Reverse description | A hare springing vigorously to the right, rendered with naturalistic energy, its body fully extended in mid-leap. Beneath the hare, a fly is depicted in aerial view, shown from above with spread wings, a distinctive and unusual device associated with the coinage of Messana. The reverse legend ΜΕΣΣΑΝΙΟΝ is distributed around the field in segments flanking the central devices, enclosed within a beaded border. |
