Amyntas III had one of the most turbulent reigns in Macedonian history before Philip II and Alexander overshadowed it entirely. He was expelled from his kingdom twice — once by the Illyrians under Bardylis, once by the Thessalian Aleuadai — and spent portions of his reign ruling only a fraction of Macedonian territory. Bronze coinage from his reign is relatively scarce, which likely reflects the disrupted administrative conditions rather than any deliberate policy.
The attribution to either Aigai or Pella reflects ongoing scholarly uncertainty about when Pella superseded the ancient ceremonial capital as the primary mint.
