| Obverse description | Emperor John II Komnenos depicted standing facing in full length, attired in the imperial divitision and loros, wearing the imperial crown. His right hand is raised holding a patriarchal cross and his left hand presents a globus cruciger. The design is executed in the hieratic, frontal style characteristic of Komnenian bronze coinage, with the imperial regalia rendered in a formal, schematized manner. A Greek inscription in the surrounding field identifies the emperor by his title and his porphyrogenite birth, reading in abbreviated form. |

| Reverse description | Christ Pantokrator depicted standing facing in full length, bearded and nimbate with a cruciform nimbus, dressed in pallium and colobium. His right hand is raised in a gesture of benediction while his left hand holds a jewelled book of the Gospels against his body. Abbreviated Christogram letters flank the figure in the field to either side. The design follows the restrained, formulaic treatment of the standing Christ type characteristic of middle Byzantine minor bronze coinage, with drapery rendered in simplified, linear strokes. |
