Shahrukh, fourth son of Timur, ruled from Herat for over four decades and deliberately repositioned the Timurid court as a center of Persian literary and artistic culture — a marked departure from his father's military priorities. The countermark on this tanka reflects the administrative reality of his sprawling realm: coins struck under earlier or regional authority were validated for continued circulation rather than recalled and reminted, a practical accommodation to the difficulties of monetary control across Central Asia.
