Beschrijving keerzijde A tortoise depicted in profile view at the center of a deeply recessed incuse square, rendered in relief with a domed carapace and visible head and limb elements. The incuse square is framed by a prominent dotted border on all four interior sides, creating a regular pellet pattern characteristic of early Lycian dynastic coinage. The field within the incuse is plain. No legend or inscription appears on this face.

Aanvullende informatie

Lycian dynastic coinage of the fifth century BC operated outside the Persian imperial monetary system despite Lycia's status as a satrapal dependency — local rulers retained the right to strike silver, a concession Athens never extracted from its own allies. The attribution "uncertain dynast" reflects a genuine scholarly impasse: Lycian inscriptions on coins of this period remain partially undeciphered, and the dynastic succession itself is poorly documented in surviving sources.

SNG von Aulock 4071 places this piece within a well-catalogued but still contested group.
