| Reverse description | A tortoise depicted in profile view at the center of a deeply recessed incuse square, rendered in relief with a domed carapace and visible head and limb elements. The incuse square is framed by a prominent dotted border on all four interior sides, creating a regular pellet pattern characteristic of early Lycian dynastic coinage. The field within the incuse is plain. No legend or inscription appears on this face. |

Lycian dynastic coinage of the fifth century BC operated outside the Persian imperial monetary system despite Lycia's status as a satrapal dependency — local rulers retained the right to strike silver, a concession Athens never extracted from its own allies. The attribution "uncertain dynast" reflects a genuine scholarly impasse: Lycian inscriptions on coins of this period remain partially undeciphered, and the dynastic succession itself is poorly documented in surviving sources.
SNG von Aulock 4071 places this piece within a well-catalogued but still contested group.
