These staters were struck at a singular moment — when Thebes, under Epaminondas, had broken Spartan hegemony at Leuctra in 371 and briefly held dominance over mainland Greece. The tight two-year window of this issue reflects the Theban ascendancy at its peak, before Epaminondas fell at Mantinea in 362, a battle his side technically won and yet which ended Theban power almost immediately. His death left no capable successor, and the city's political authority collapsed within a generation.
