Thebes struck these staters during a period of aggressive Spartan intervention in Boeotia — the polis had been occupied by a Spartan garrison installed in the Kadmeia citadel in 382 BC, an act widely condemned even within Sparta's own alliance. Production of civic coinage effectively ceased at that point, making issues from the preceding window increasingly attributable to the years immediately before the occupation. The magistrate name Eche places this piece within a known sequence documented by Hepworth, anchoring it to a specific administrative moment rather than a broad span.
