Flanking the lower body of the amphora, the two Greek letters epsilon (E) are placed to the lower left and lower right, forming the magistrate's abbreviated name or ethnic designation. Thebes struck this stater during one of the most turbulent decades in Boiotian history — the period immediately preceding the Spartan seizure of the Kadmeia in 382 BC, when a pro-Spartan faction handed over the citadel to Phoibidas without a declaration of war. The occupation would last until 379 BC and effectively suspended Theban coinage production for the duration.
The magistrate name Eche places this piece within a narrow, datable sequence of issues identified by Hepworth's die study. Few Boiotian federal staters can be attributed to specific magistrates with this degree of confidence.
