Kyzikos, situated on the Propontis in Mysia, dominated electrum coinage production in the Greek world for several centuries, and its staters circulated far beyond the Black Sea trade routes into mainland Greece and the Aegean. The city's consistent electrum alloy — drawn from Pactolian sources and maintained at a reliable gold-to-silver ratio — made Kyzkene staters a de facto mercantile currency trusted by Athenian bankers and Pontic merchants alike.
Each reverse type in the Kyzikene series was struck from a fresh obverse die pairing, making identical specimens genuinely rare. The Von Fritze classification remains the authoritative sequence, though ongoing die studies continue to refine the chronology within the 550–450 BC window.
