The musculature of the horse is crisply engraved, and the elaborately detailed feathering of the wings — shown in layered, fan-like striations — is a hallmark of Lampsakene die work. The tail curves downward naturally between the hindquarters. The field is devoid of legend or exergue inscription, the entire reverse composition being occupied by the dynamic figure of the mythical creature. The striking is characteristic of the hammered technique, with the flan exhibiting the typical irregular outline of ancient Greek gold staters. |
