Obverse description Europa seated facing right within the spreading branches of a plane tree, her draped figure rendered in high relief with naturalistic folds. She turns her head slightly, her hair loosely arranged, and holds a small object in her hands at her lap. The composition is framed entirely by the arching boughs and foliage of the tree, which fill the field to left and right, a hallmark of the distinctive Gortynian artistic style. The rendering displays the accomplished late Classical die-cutting characteristic of Cretan mint output circa 330 BC, with fine attention to drapery and anatomical detail.
