Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Anastasius II Artemius, bearded and facing the viewer, wearing an elaborate crown and imperial chlamys fastened with a fibula at the right shoulder. The emperor holds a globus cruciger in his right hand, symbolizing imperial authority over the Christian world, and an akakia in his left hand. The effigy is rendered in the characteristic flat, hieratic style of early eighth-century Byzantine coinage. The legend surrounds the bust within a beaded border.
