Reverse description Emperor Valentinian III stands facing, draped and cuirassed, holding a long jewelled cross in his right hand and a globus cruciger surmounted by a Victory in his left hand. His right foot is placed upon the head of a human-headed serpent coiled beneath him, symbolizing imperial triumph over evil. The figure of Victory on the globe is rendered with her skirt asymmetrically gathered. The mintmark RV COMOB appears in the exergue, denoting the Ravenna mint and confirming the refined gold standard (obryzum) of the solidus. A beaded border frames the design.
